Music has the power to turn a cocktail into a conga, an office into an auditorium or a haircut into a harmony. No matter what your industry, music could make your business better!

But it is important to make sure you are correctly licensed.

TheMusicLicence allows you to legally play music for employees or customers in your business through the radio, TV, other digital devices and live performances.

Music in public

If you play or perform music in public within your business or organisation, the chances are you need TheMusicLicence. Purchasing music either digitally, on a CD, record or tape permits you to listen to it at home for your personal use. However, if this music is played outside your home as a public performance, then you’ll usually need TheMusicLicence.

Legal Music Licence

The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988

Under The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, permission is needed from the relevant copyright holders – those people who create music – in order to play or perform music in public. TheMusicLicence gives you this permission in relation to the vast majority of commercially available music.

This means you don’t have to spend your time and energy potentially contacting thousands of music rights holders individually for permission to play or perform their music in public.

How it works

After our business costs, licence fees are distributed to music creators via our parent companies, PPL and PRS for Music. This means that by purchasing TheMusicLicence, not only are you ensuring your premises are legally compliant, you are supporting the future of music by helping to ensure its creators are paid for their work.

One contract, one invoice, one licence.
