Home » Music encourages higher spend at Bonfire Night events, finds PPL PRS survey
More than 2 in 3 (69%) people planning to attend firework night events would be willing to spend more on entry if music and live entertainment were on offer, according to a survey by PPL PRS.
The survey* of 500 UK adults found that of those, almost 1 in 3 (29%) would be willing to spend up to £15 on entry, while a quarter (25%) would be willing to spend at least £20.
Overall, more than 1 in 3 (36%) said they would be more likely to attend an event that had live music and entertainment, while one in six (16%) agreed that music and entertainment are important additions to firework events.
The research, which found that the majority (80%) of event goers would be attending council or community events, also revealed that 20% of people would also stay longer to soak up the atmosphere at events where music and entertainment featured.
Kellie Bugby, Festivals & Events Senior Officer at Leicester City Council, which hosts an annual Bonfire event attracting around 15,000 attendees, explains:
“Music adds an extra layer of atmosphere to the Abbey Park Bonfire and Fireworks Display, but it plays a supporting role to the main attraction, the fireworks and bonfire themselves.”
We offer the opportunity for local performers to use the stage as a platform to showcase their talent, entertain the crowd, and be part of one of Leicester’s most popular public events. It’s a great chance for musicians, dancers, and community groups to gain exposure, perform in front of a large audience, and contribute to the vibrant atmosphere leading up to the fireworks display.”
The research found that music during firework displays was expected by the majority of attendees, too, with over half (52%) agreeing that displays with music are more entertaining and impactful.
As Kellie adds:
“While the live music and performances help to build excitement and keep the crowd entertained, and the soundtrack during the fireworks can enhance the experience, it’s ultimately the visual spectacle that people come to see.
The scale, colour, and choreography of the fireworks are the main focus, and music simply helps to complement that. It can add to the mood and help with pacing.”
“The music used at the Abbey Park Bonfire and Fireworks Display is carefully selected to complement the atmosphere of the event. The fireworks soundtrack often includes a mix of popular hits, classic tracks, and dramatic pieces, chosen to match the pace and mood of the display. While not always based on a specific theme, the music is updated each year to keep the show fresh and engaging.”
Overall, the survey found that around three-quarters (76%) of UK adults were considering attending an organised event last year, rising to 84% of 18 to 24-year-olds, and an overwhelming 92% of 25 to 34-year-olds.
As younger people and young families looking to celebrate Bonfire Night, many agree that music could help to create a positive and accommodating atmosphere.
Just under a quarter (22%) said music makes an event feel more family-friendly, and almost half (45%) said music makes the overall experience more enjoyable.
As Kellie continues: “Leicester Council’s firework event is designed to be welcoming and fun for all ages, with a strong focus on creating a family-friendly atmosphere.
By keeping the atmosphere relaxed, safe, and full of activities, we make sure it’s an event that families, and everyone, can really enjoy together.”
