It’s no secret that music has the power to lift our spirits, boost our motivation and impact our productivity. The question you might ask yourself is: but to what degree? Well, we surveyed 500 people in the UK who are currently playing background music in their office and workplace and the results are overwhelming. Let’s get into it!
Firstly, four out of five respondents said they enjoy listening to background music at their workplace. A large contributor to this could be how music has the ability to create a more upbeat atmosphere, a massive 89% of people said playing music helps to lift the atmosphere in their place of work. The conclusion, overall, was that 87% of people think playing background music creates a positive working environment.
However, playing music is not just about creating an enjoyable atmosphere, it’s also a great way of keeping your team’s morale positive and upbeat. So, let’s talk about how this can affect your team’s productivity.
We’ve mentioned in previous blog entries that music can impact your dopamine levels (Please see our insights on health and wellbeing, improving productivity and affecting mood and reducing stress). However, did you know dopamine could be a key component in driving your motivation?
Dopamine has several functions and numerous actions can influence it. Playing music has been shown to increase its levels but, interestingly, research has shown that dopamine actually encourages us to action.
Before we achieve a goal or target, we need to have the motivation to execute the steps to achieve that said goal or target. If you could trigger dopamine releases by simply tuning into the radio or streaming a curated playlist then why wouldn’t you when it could influence your employees to take action?
Our survey revealed 78% of respondents feel more motivated when music is playing in an office or workplace. Moreover, 86% of people agree that they feel more engaged and focused when background music is playing.
Finally, playing music can help to create an environment that is balanced, relaxed and inclusive. That’s why a whopping 93% of people agree that playing music can create a calmer working environment and can help to alleviate stress and anxiety.
